Frame Size (H x L): 21” x 27”
Flag Size (H x L): 12” x 18”
Offered is a US Navy Jack or what is often times referred to as simply a Union Jack. On special occasions, a naval ship will be “dressed” and fly an ensign on its stern (i.e., the back), a jack on its bow (i.e., the front), and a commissioning pennant on its main mast. The Royal Navy flies the canton of its ensign as a jack, and this tradition was then carried over to the US Navy. As such, in the US, the Union Jack is simply a blue field covered with the stars representing each state of the Union. The dimensions of the US Union Jack being flown on the bow should match the dimensions of the canton of the ensign flown at the stern.
The commissioning pennant designates a ship’s status as a commissioned vessel of the navy, the commissioning occurring the first time the pennant is raised. It is only to be displayed by a ship in government service, and is displayed at all times, the only exception being when a flag officer or civilian official is embarked and flies his personal flag in its place. Modern commissioning pennants (i.e., 20th century) include a blue field, seven white stars on the blue field, and single longitudinal stripes of red and white extending from the blue field.
Conservation Process: This flag was hand sewn to cotton fabric, and both were hand sewn to a mounting board. To prevent the black dye in the cotton fabric from seeping into the flag, it was first washed in a standard wash and then in a dye setting wash. The flag is positioned behind Optium Museum Acrylic.
