Offered is a US service flag that dates to the World War II era (1939-1945).  In the US, a service flag is an official banner that the family of a service member displays.  Service flags were first displayed during World War I, and have been displayed in every US war since.

This service flag includes a red border surrounding a rectangular white field, and the rectangular white field surrounds a blue star.  It further includes a yellow fringe that surrounds the left side, bottom side, and right side.  A thin rectangle of metal is attached to the top side, and a red and white hanging string is attached thereto.

Conservation Process: This flag was hand sewn to cotton fabric, and both were hand sewn to a mounting board.  To prevent the black dye in the cotton fabric from seeping into the flag, it was first washed in a standard wash and then in a dye setting wash.  The flag is positioned behind Optium Museum Acrylic.

Frame: The antique frame includes an outer walnut layer and an inner gilded layer.  It dates to between 1860 and 1890.

Condition: This service flag exhibits some minor tears, the most notable of which is in the upper right corner of the white field, and the other of which is below the white field.  It further exhibits some age appropriate fading, but presents wonderfully.
