Offered is a 1913 President Wilson inauguration pennant, dating to 1913.  Pennants of this style were made by Rudolph Brothers, headquartered at 19 N. 5th Street in Philadelphia.  They were "Jobbers of Toys & Novelties."  This pennant includes red, white, and blue stripes, and the lettering is written in metallic gold. 

Two similar examples to this pennant are documented in the Threads of History, written by Herbert Ridgeway Collins, as entries 956 and 958.  Mr. Collins was the curator of the Division of Political History at the Smithsonian Institute.  His book is the best reference available for political textile collectors and includes over 1500 examples, dating from 1775 to 1979.  In writing his book, Mr. Collins sent 1000s of letters to collectors, museums, and universities, and requested their assistance in his quest to document every known political textile.    

Woodrow Wilson was the 28th President of the United States, and served from 1913 to 1921.  The election of 1912 was a four-way contest, in which Wilson was the Democratic Party’s nominee, President Taft was the Republican Party’s nominee, former President Roosevelt was the Progressive Party’s nominee, and Eugene Debs was the Socialist Party’s nominee.  Wilson won the election with a large majority of the Electoral College, but with only 42% of the popular vote.  Roosevelt won 27% of the popular vote, Taft won 23%, and Debs won 6%.  Wilson became only the second elected president from the Democratic Party in the years between 1860 and 1932, and this was the last election, in which neither a Republican nor a Democrat took second place.    

Conservation Process: This pennant was hand sewn to cotton fabric, and both were hand sewn to a mounting board.  To prevent the black dye in the cotton fabric from seeping into the pennant, it was first washed in a standard wash and then in a dye setting wash.  The pennant is positioned behind Optium Museum Acrylic.
