MATFIELD GREEN, KANSAS
Shown between the second and third rows of the overprint is a map of the state of Kansas, highlighting Matfield Green and the Flint Hills. The Flint Hills is a region of eastern Kansas and north-central Oklahoma. It was named after its abundant flint deposits that have eroded from bedrock and that now rest just below ground level. Early settlers to the area were unable to raise crops in the rocky soil, and instead focused on raising cattle. Because of this focus, the Flint Hills is a densely covered area of intact tallgrass prairie, and the largest such prairie in North America.
Wayne Rogler was the third generation owner of Rogler Ranch. Charles Rogler, his grandfather, founded the ranch in 1859, just north of Matfield Green. Charles passed the ranch down to his son, Henry, and Henry passed the ranch down to Wayne. The Rogler Ranch began as 160 acres and grew to 4000 acres. Though Wayne passed away in 1993, the original home and outbuildings of the Rogler Ranch are open to the public via the Pioneer Bluffs Foundation.
Conservation Process: This feed sack was hand sewn to cotton fabric, and both were hand sewn to a mounting board. To prevent the black dye in the cotton fabric from seeping into the feed sack, it was first washed in a standard wash and then in a dye setting wash. The feed sack is positioned behind Optium Museum Acrylic.
Frame: This offering is in our Large Reclaimed Wood Frame.
Condition Report: This feed sack includes some minor stains, but overall is in excellent condition.
