Offered is an “I Love You California” felt pennant, a distinctive souvenir from the 1915 Panama-California Exposition held in San Diego, California. The Exposition, which celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal, aimed to showcase the cultural and economic achievements of California and the broader southwestern United States. The Exposition was a landmark event, attracting visitors from across the nation and helping to establish San Diego as a cultural and commercial hub. This pennant, emblazoned with vibrant colors and imagery, is representative of the promotional materials produced to commemorate the Exposition.
The pennant features an illustration of a woman embracing a large California grizzly bear, an iconic symbol of the state. This imagery is reminiscent of California's state flag, where the bear is a prominent emblem. Above the figures, the words “I Love You” are printed, a declaration that ties the pennant's sentiment to the popular song "I Love You, California," which became the official state song in 1951. This phrase and imagery evoke a sense of pride and affection for California, aligning with the goals of the Exposition to celebrate the state’s identity and achievements.
At the bottom of the pennant is the word “California,” written in stylized text. The building depicted behind the figures on the pennant is one of the Spanish Colonial Revival structures constructed for the exposition, specifically representing the Casa de Balboa, which remains a landmark in San Diego’s Balboa Park. The architecture of these buildings, inspired by Spanish and Mexican design elements, contributed to the exposition’s theme of California as a gateway between the Americas.
The Panama-California Exposition ran from 1915 to 1917 and was unique for its emphasis on architecture and landscaping. Unlike previous world’s fairs that focused on industrial achievements, this Exposition highlighted cultural and regional characteristics. The Exposition grounds featured intricate gardens and architectural styles intended to reflect California's heritage, blending indigenous, Mexican, and Spanish influences. The Casa de Balboa, like other structures in Balboa Park, became an enduring part of San Diego’s architectural landscape.
